Legend has it that JC was not expecting to be walloped by little Junie for real...you see Joan's earring go flying! No wonder Collins always chickened out and let her double do the catfights for her on "Dynasty"! Also, "The Opposite Sex," made at mid-50s MGM, shows Collins being made over to resemble Metro girl Liz Taylor. The look and the performance are strictly surface!
Allegedly Bette also dodged getting bitch slapped by Olivia and let her double take the hit. Guess Baby Jane could dish it out, but not take it!
And I was in a movie theater when Madonna took her ladies room slap from then unknown Julianne Moore--and what few people were there clapped!
I recently caught The Opposite Sex after several years and found new pleasures in it that I either hadn't caught before or had forgotten. That catfight between Dolores Gray and Ann Miller is great, Ann Sheridan is even more chic than I remember and best of all was that slap that Miss Priss June landed on that cheap piece of baggage that Joan played. I think it helped that Joan wasn't ready for the smack, it made her reaction more true.
That whck Joan took was the subject of a TCM "Word of Mouth" that I was glad to see her involved in. I like to post little shots of the stars in those from time to time and hers is "in the chute" so to speak!
In "Hush...Hush" the shots of Olivia's face are with a body double for Davis. Strange that bulldozer Bette delighted in kicking Joan Crawford across the floor in "Baby Jane" but when it came to trusting her friend Olivia to deliver a few screen slaps, she chickened out!
Joel, I enjoy "The Opposite Sex" for the reasons you cite and more. Don't know if you ever read my tribute to that movie, but there are plenty of photos and bits of trivia here:
I love Julianne Moore and also saw "Body of Evidence" in a nearly abandoned theater. Her makeup is great in the movie and I love the look she gives Madonna in the mirror before whacking her soundly in the face! ;-)

"Thank you for your nice message, and for the link to your blog. I had actually seen your blog before - a friend showed it to me a year or two ago. You clearly have an intense and wonderful passion for cult and genre cinema... Thank you for joining my page, and for sharing your passion for EARTHQUAKE and other films of that remarkable era in our industry. My husband would have gotten a huge kick out of it! With love, Monica"-- Monica Lewis Tribute to Monica

As a gesture of thanks, I would like to send you a signed copy of my book. I think you would enjoy it. So if you would like one or a signed photo, let me know with an address I can send it to. - Sincerely, Mark Goddard" (via e-mail) Tribute to Mark

It sure wouldn't be Joan Collins I'd be slapping in that scene!
