Poseidon Quickies: This is the "Night."

The woe of an actor popular in a certain era who must then navigate a career later on when few modern audiences remember then (or care to try.) Some are wealthy enough to retire gracefully, some are lucky enough to keep working in prestigious pictures, but some... find themselves resigned to items like Evils of the Night (1985!) One glimpse at the names involved in this teen slasher flick meant that I had no choice but to check it out. It was so much worse than I could ever have imagined. But... there was one small benefit. Nestled in with all the young female T & A (& P!) there were some attractive young men. And with a 1:24 running time, it's not like I was subjecting myself to some horrible, bloated mess (like a certain recent superhero movie I tried to get into, but gave up on during the second of its three hours!) Evils of the Night is bad. But it was sometimes entertainingly so. And because I graduated high school in 1985, it was nostalgic to me for some of the hair, clothes, etc...

Your eyes are not deceiving you... This is Julie Newmar, John Carradine and Tina Louise as aliens (!) who need the blood of young people to prolong life on their planet. It doesn't make them younger or anything fun like that. You just live on and on (witness Carradine!) for many more years than otherwise anticipated.

Newmar was about 52 at this time and still in good physical condition. She'd been appearing frequently on television, but hadn't been in a movie of any consequence since Mackenna's Gold in 1969. She is currently 89.

Louise, a year younger than Newmar, was in about the same boat, working on TV and low-rent movies with her last film of any note being The Stepford Wives (1975.) She had, at least, been featured on the super hot TV show Dallas for a while. She is currently 88.

Carradine was just shy of 80 when he made this. He'd been in films since 1930 and worked tirelessly always in every conceivable sort of project (though chiefly horror towards the end) right up until his death in 1988. He was 82 and was felled by heart and kidney failure.

The alien blood-seekers have come to Earth in what looks like a decorated to-go food container...

The aforementioned trio of interplanetary beings decides that the best way to obtain young blood is to hire two down-on-their-luck garage mechanics to visit a nearby lake and abduct various college students there on vacation...!

Neville Brand, then 65, is one of them. He'd done a number of thrillers and horror films in prior years, but this would mark his final bit of acting on screen. Emphysema claimed Brand in 1992 at age 71.

The other is 59 year-old Aldo Ray, who'd been taking practically any job for quite a few years in order to pay back alimony and other debts. He passed away in 1991 from throat cancer at age 64.

It's no real treat to see the quintet of once-popular performers slumming in this total and complete drek, though each of them is giving his or her role the best they can. But none of them are really in it long enough, despite their billing, to warrant all that much comment. As the henchmen, Ray and Brand are on hand a fair amount. The aliens, with the exception of Louise, have only limited screen time. The movie (and this post!) mostly concerns the victims.

If one finds himself tuned in to a piece of crap like this, it's always nice to at least have some male pulchritude on display. The summer, lakeside setting allows for some of this.

A fair hunk of the running time of this movie concerns idiotic, hopelessly horny coeds trying their best to get it on. This particular couple was portrayed by actual XXX adult film stars Amber Lynn and Jerry Butler. (Lynn shows all in her scenes, but Butler, still attempting to break into the mainstream, offers nothing but a lot of chest and was using his real name in the billing.)

If he wasn't going to show us anything else, at least we got to see some prolonged hairy chest shots. You may recall Butler as the one-time husband of Lisa Loring (Wednesday Addams of The Addams Family) whose tell-all book "Raw Talent" caused some shockwaves at the time.

Warren Beatty once infamously described him as one of the best actors he'd ever seen...! Butler died of pancreatic cancer in 2018 at age 58, following a long period of personal difficulty.

I found this sunburned cutie rather intriguing as well.

He later turns up in a lilac Izod polo and Guess jeans! It's all so "80s" without even trying to be. It's just what it was.

Yes, please...

This guy in green is really not my type to be honest. But he's the ostensible leading man of the film and he has a couple of eye-opening moments.

Getting up from the campfire was one of them.

I like a good hot dog over an open flame. LOL

These shorts, which he wears for most of his screen time, are just plain tight!

I'm not joking. (No, I'm not gonna start that again! Ha ha!)

What really got my attention, though, was his introduction on the beach.

I swear there is no lining in these shorts and you can see right up the open leg...!

I'm not joking. God, I love the '80s....

Do check out the super-futuristic get-up, punctuated by the shoes, given to Louise for a costume. She turned her nose up at Rescue from Gilligan's Island, but said yes to this?!

If you should wish to wallow in his obscure gem, the movie is free (with infrequent ads) on Tubi in a beautiful print right here. I will leave you, though, with our stars in happier days.

Let's face it. Carradine was always old and always scary (!), but I did find these young-ish portraits. He, of course, also gave the world a set of sons who took up the profession.

Brand was never a pretty-boy, even in the beginning, but he was an effective performer who could play a variety of types in his hey-day.

Ray was a burly, but cuddly, bear with an endearingly raspy speaking voice.

Newmar will always be immortal for her portrayal of Catwoman on Batman and had a body to die for.

Despite her disinterest in it, Louise is also immortal for her role of Ginger Grant, which led to the pop culture question that so many men are asked, "Ginger or Mary Ann?"

This was a special comedown for Ray and Louise. In 1958, they'd costarred in the United Artists release of God's Little Acre together!

Decades before the up and comers (or in most case downers) seen in Evils of the Night, they too had enjoyed their own time rolling in the hay.

That's all folks! Till next time.

I met Louise many moons ago working at a pr company in NYC. She was a guest star during a Scrabble event we sponsored. Incredibly pale, incredibly sweet, incredibly smart. She went everywhere with an umbrella to protect her from the sun. I've always been a big fan and mentioned how great she is in "The Stepford Wives"; she seemed relieved I didn't bring up that island, hahah. She sort of claimed me as her assistagay that afternoon and we had a fun time. Hard to describe the way she talks, but I love it. A friend showed me an OLD newspaper ad with club appearances, and it seems at one point Carradine did some sort of supper club show in NYC, I have no idea what, read Poe in a menacing voice? Anyway, great post, thanks!

I found it difficult to concentrate on anything but that melting pudding that is Neville Brand’s face. I’m a year older than him? Lordy...
And my hunkalicious Aldo - oh, how the mighty are fallen!

Another fun post! Looks like it might be on that, "So bad it's good," train and I might have to check it out...Tubi is such a great source for these types of movies.

A little trivia - Julie Newmar and Tina Louise both appeared on Broadway in the hit musical, Li'l Abner, back in the 50's. The inset photo in Julie's Catwoman pic is actually her as Stupefyin' Jones (any man who looks at her freezes, important during Sadie Hawkins Day). Tina played femme fatale, Appassionata Von Climax.

I would love it if you could feature this film in one of your posts some day, Poseidon. LOTS of camp and beefcake on display, corny, cartoony fun and fabulous Michael Kidd choreography. Most of the Broadway cast reprised their roles in what is basically a filmed version of the musical. Unfortunately, Tina did not recreate her role, but she was ably replaced by a sexy Stella Stevens.

Other fun sightings - Valerie Harper, Beth Howland, Donna Douglas as townspeople/dancers and the piece de resistance, several musclemen of that era in speedos! Yee-haw!

Thanks again and be well!

Jeff

Happy Birthday (February 11) to Tina Louise!

I started watching EVILS OF THE NIGHT on Tubi late last night, and will have to go back to it. It's a doozy!

One thing I immediately spotted (disgusting perv that I am) is that Jerry Butler and Amber Lynn are not the only '80s porn stars in this; they appear to have used some lesser-known ones in some of the nude and "soft action" shots that spice up the film.

The opening credits scene has two couples getting it on in the dark, and the couple that gets the first (and most) action going are pornsters Shone Taylor (who disappointingly, keeps his pants on) and Crystal Breeze (who, of course, gets fully naked). I guess you didn't find Taylor attractive enough to framecap him.

The second, less exposed but more attractive couple intercut during this sequence features the first guy you show shirtless in your framecaps, who likewise keeps his shorts/trunks on the whole time.

While "Billy" doesn't get to do much beyond promptly getting captured and killed by the aliens-- thus getting the premise established-- he was played by one of the few "non-porn" cast members who actually had a career of sorts before and after this film.

Tony O'Dell was in the first two KARATE KID movies as a member of the "Cobra Kai" team, and was one of the brainy kids (the preppy guy) in Howard Hesseman's class in the ABC series HEAD OF THE CLASS! He's still working, and even recently turned up in the COBRA KAI streaming series.

Later, during the first daytime lakeside beach scene, two girls on a blanket strip down and rub lotion all over each other; one is Jody Swafford, who appeared in XXX under a variety of screen names. Oddly enough, Jerry Butler's introduced while peeping at them from the bushes while they're going at it, angering Amber Lynn-- though ironically, all three had worked together in porn around this time.

I haven't gotten far enough in to tell if there are any more porn actors involved, but the three other shirtless guys you framecap do seem oddly familiar, despite having very few IMDb credits beyond this film.

The "sunburned cutie" (who apparently doesn't even get a character name) was Scott Hunter, who worked the most of the three, with eight TV/low budget credits between 1984-1991.

The "Yes, please" guy also shown on the beach ("Ron," who apparently can't stop referring to his dick size) was Keith Fisher, who had only two other credits, including a 1982 appearance on an episode of DIFFERENT STROKES involving a male swim team.

(continued)

The lead actor ("Brian") was David Hawk, who has only one other credit on IMDb, a single episode of the soap RYAN'S HOPE around the same time. While you find him "not your type," he did grab my attention, largely because he looks so familiar.

And yes, I know a lot of this "looks familiar" thing I experience is most likely due to performers just having a certain "look" that's prevalent at a certain time. Still, you *do* also get a few cases where someone did nude modeling or even porn on the way up.

It's probably only a coincidence and a resemblance, but there was a very similar-looking guy from this same period who did a few magazine layouts and a couple of gay porn videos, where he was built up as an upcoming "legitimate" performer who had just appeared in a soap opera.

But looking just now at online photos of the porn performer (who was variously billed as "Doug Cory," "Joe Davis," or "Mr. Celebrity Sex"), it probably isn't the same guy-- though it's really hard to tell without comparing video scenes to see his face in motion, which I can't do since I don't have access to the porn scenes.

I suspect it's possible that whoever created that "Mr. Celebrity Sex" gimmick had spotted David Hawk on RYAN'S HOPE and just assumed it was the same person-- or that they merely thought they could convince other people he was a "legit" performer.

And mercifully, G.T. Taylor-- who played "Connie," the incredibly annoying helium-voiced blonde bimbo in the striped shirt-- has no other IMDb credits. (And I *so* hope "Connie" buys it before this movie is over...)

One other thing I noticed about the film that surprised me-- there's songs in this thing performed by Eddie Mekka (yes, "Carmine Ragusa" from LAVERNE & SHIRLEY) and his then-wife. You get to hear "the Big Ragoo" warble while people do the horizontal mambo! (Even though he gets a big opening titles credit, do you suppose he even knew what they were going to use the songs for?)

Anyway, I've got to get back on Tubi later and finish this-- I only got as far as the-- uhm, "hot dog roasting challenge"-- and just skipped ahead a little to see if there were more sex scenes.

Thanks for digging up, reviewing and posting the link to this little gem of weirdness, Poseidon! I'd seen reviews for this in various magazines throughout the years, but it didn't really grab my interest (despite the cast of veteran favorites) until you presented it here!

As always, many thanks for all you do! Love to all and be safe and well, everyone! And an early Happy Valentine's Day!

I agree! Don't know why Tina Louise turned down the "Gilligan" reunions and did this instead? LOL I guess she must have had her reasons! It's like when Farrah Fawcett left Charlie's Angels. But the films she ended up doing like "Saturn 3" and "Sunburn" where really not any better than an "Angels" episode! But let's face it, no matter what other roles these two actresses had throughout their careers ( and they did have a few highly acclaimed ones over the years ) it's their famous TV roles that made them icons!

The decorated to-go food container is actually the Galactica shuttle from the 1978 series. Guess Universal would license their scifi stock footage to anybody!

Well that was a scary movie. Aldo Ray (big sigh).

Ptolemy1, that's rather bizarre about Carradine performing in a club! I'm with you... what in the world would it have been? I don't imagine songs and a tap routine! LOL Very neat that you got to spend time with Ms. Louise.

Dan, one trusts that you were not as HARD on your face as Brand was. He had quite a few problems, not the least of which, sadly, was some PTSD from time served during WWII. But there was a lot of drinking, smoking and who knows what else along the way...

Forever1267, he was like a textbook bear.

A post with him, Charles Bronson and many others! -- https://neptsdepths.blogspot.com/2020/07/going-along-swimmingly.html

jobj69, I didn't realize that Tina was in Li'l Abner. I knew about Julie (and did realize that the inset was from her role in the musical.) I know I saw the movie a looooonnng time ago, but it is seemingly NEVER aired on TV. I can't recall the last time I saw it being run on any channel. Maybe some time I will dig it up and look it over again. :-) Thanks!

hsc, this was a "Quickie" as I wanted to get a post up, but had so little time - and was heading out of town at 2:30pm on Friday. So I kept things abbreviated, especially regarding the (much!) lesser known stars of the show. You've gone and done all that research for me! You get an apple from the teacher for this. Ha ha! And I'm sure you can see how time-consuming said research can be. It isn't so much that Taylor wasn't attractive enough to note, I was just sort of annoyed at the stupidity of that scene and I also sometimes like to keep some studs unturned, as it were, for others to locate when they watch (those who are brave enough to! ha ha!) I did MEAN TO mention the music by Eddie "Carmine" Mekka and totally forgot!!! Thanks so much for relaying that in your comments. Very surprising! Thanks much for the concordance of further info on the participants of this item.

K Jenkins, I will never forget being all primed to watch "Rescue from Gilligan's Island" (which, for other reasons, I was not allowed to see.... It was family Monopoly night and my Dad angrily switched off the TV!!) and discovering a different Ginger!! It was horrifying! When EVERY OTHER cast member comes back, just do the damn thing, even if you demand a brief cameo or reduced participation in order to avoid being heavily featured. Even Farrah went back to "Angels" though she was forced to... I always loved those (with little sister Cris!)

Looking Up, great catch! I was a fan of "Galactica" but didn't notice...! Deja View! ;-)

A, thanks!

This was awesome. I have seen Carradine in such awful and cheap horror movies that this was no surprise, but Julie Newmar suprised me. I didn't recognize Aldo Ray at all. Tough look on the porn star girls, this seems made for midnight viewing or straight to video.
Julie Newmar as some of you remember was in the George Michael "Too Funky" video which is set around a Thierry Mugler fashion show. I recently went to a Mugler retrospective in a museum and there was a wall sized screen showing the video on repeat. I stood and watched Julie 4 times, she was only a few years older than in this film and looked amazing. I was reading the comments here and was thrilled to hear nice things about Tina Louise. She lives near the office I used to work at and seemed like a sourpuss. Lol maybe she didn't like gay men like me stalking her on the sidewalk. Thanks for this delicious piece of trash and all the savvy comments!

It seems that people are incredibly hard and nasty about Tina Louise. I've seen probably now over a hundred posts about her that were throwing her under the bus as this horrid person. There is the fact she didn't return for those dreadful reunion films, the ETrue Hollywood Story that was done on the show years ago that Dawn Wells executive produced Surviving Gilligan's Island and possibly Bob Denvers remarks about Tina in his book.
There is a great blog article here from someone who did speak with Tina

Hi Poseidon - just sending this to you, not for posting. Found a copy of Li'l Abner on Youtube...not a perfect copy - looks good, but unfortunately the motion aspect isn't 100 percent smooth, which somewhat affects the jubilant choreography...still, pretty decent - and a good reminder of what a brilliant comedienne Stella Stevens was, in addition to her beauty...RIP, Appassionata!

Take care,

Jeff

Aldo Ray was I thought a terrific screen presence. In the 1950s he starred opposite some amazing major stars e.g. Judy Holiday. Kim Novak, Rita Hayworth and Humphrey Bogart. In 1961nhe came here to Ireland to make a film entitled “Johnny Nobody” with William Bendix.

Sad that his career seemed to just fade away.
