Tub Time: Bath Salt and Peppard

Did you ever have this happen to you? You come across a movie and think, "Oh yeah... I've seen that," and then later discover that you actually haven't seen it! You've just confused it with another movie that you did watch at some prior point. That was the case with 1970's Cannon for Cordoba. I recently ran across it and decided that it had been ticked off my list, but I somehow had gotten it gummed up in my mind with the 1972 TV-movie, The Bravos. So I dove into Cannon and found it to be watchable enough, thanks to a surprisingly familiar cast and a variety of colorful characters. (It also boasts an Elmer Bernstein score, which often helps.) One of the movie's set pieces concerns a bath and so - completist that I am - I had to bring that to this site.

George Peppard plays the ringleader of a hardscrabble group of mercenaries hired to retrieve some cannons that have been swiped by Mexican rebels. He and his "dirty half dozen or so" pals have to wade through various dangers en route to a fortress where the guns are being held. It's derivative of several other (better) movies and even presages Peppard's later hit series The A-Team.

While doing some reconnaissance work in a brothel, Peppard is trying to keep tabs on a person of interest, but becomes sidelined by one of the prostitutes! This blonde lady of the evening is played by Janis Hansen. (Hansen, this very same year, played a nun in Airport - the one who helps the doctor with the injured - meaning she really covered all the acting bases in one brief period!)

One of her pals at the house of ill-repute is Kate O'Mara (perhaps you'll recall her as Alexis' sister Caress Morrell on Dynasty.) She's immediately overcome by the smell of dusty, filthy, sweaty Peppard.

Before anyone can say, "Do you take American Express?" they've dragged him into O'Mara's room and have begun trying to remove various articles of his clothing and accessories. As he's not actually there to get it on with them, he resists.

This won't do for Hansen. She takes his gun and holds it on him, saying (hilariously), "We don't do laundry" and ordering him to get his foul-smelling clothes off and get into the nearby tub.

A few moments later he's being made presentable by the two bath time attendants.

O'Mara even makes doubly-sure that he's squeaky clean everywhere before they entertain him!

Then his bath is over and he's given a pink towel (a "Cannon?") to dry of with.

Fun as it all was, this is not why he's there or what he came for! So he has to struggle to get dressed because now they really want to give him a tumble!

These are "working girls" after all, so he manages to cut himself a deal.

He gives them "half" their money by splitting a bill down the middle. If they'll let him go for a few minutes in order to take care of his other business, he'll be back with the other half. This placates them enough to where he can go shoot it up outside for a minute.

This sequence made the lobby cards for the film, albeit with the negative flipped. (This happened so often back in the day!)

There! An easy fix.

This foreign card even depicts the cast between takes with Peppard's pants open. The movie, in a better, more sharp print than the ones I screen-capped here, is available for viewing if you're interested at this link.

The End!

  1. Trivial intertwine:

Kate O'Mara was a featured guest on Dynasty.

George Peppard was the original choice to play Blake Carrington on same.

  2. And there's more: just before Kate O'Mara was cast in DYNASTY, she was under consideration for a regular role on THE COLBYS, but had to pass due to still being under contract in England when production would've started. She said she was relieved when they dropped her character ("one scheming brunette too many") and terminated her five-year contract, because she didn't enjoy living in California.

About a decade after O'Mara played Alexis' sister, she turned up in one episode of the original run of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! as *Patsy's* "legendary" jet-setter sister Jackie popping in for an unexpected reunion-- much to Patsy's ultimate disappointment. (They brought O'Mara back for a second episode in the revival, about another ten years later.)

And around the same time she was giving a good scrubbing to George Peppard, O'Mara was in a couple of Hammer horror films-- THE VAMPIRE LOVERS (which kicked off the whole '70s "lesbian vampire" thing) and THE HORROR OF FRANKENSTEIN (where she tangled with a pre-"Darth Vader" David Prowse as a muscular version of the monster that was basically Rocky Horror wearing Boris Karloff's "flat top" headpiece.)

CANNON FOR CORDOBA is one of those titles I've seen in lists but never really heard anything about. Simply amazing how you can find material for a good post just about anywhere.

(And is it just the way they framecap, or does George Peppard have noticeably small nipples?)

Thanks for yet another fun post, Poseidon! Love to all and be safe and well, everyone!

  3. I must admit I was surprised to see Kate out of a coffin or cape in a film set in this time. I have never seen her in an American film, so this was interesting. I did adore her on Dynasty, bu she probably made the best decision. Sable Colby and Caress would have been too much, even for me.
On the above comments, thanks hsc, I did not not know the name or the Darth Vader connection to the sexiest Frankenstein! I loved that flat headed muscle man!
George Peppard had beautiful eyes. I just got the Canon towel joke, hilarious

  4. I remember Janis Hansen as Felix's wife on "The Odd Couple", Also, when I was a kid, I remember reading about Janis Hansen being shot to death and got her confused with Janice Hansen (Miss New Jersey 1944), who was shot to death in 1959 by the Mob. I could not understand how, if she was on TV and movies, how could she be dead. What a dope I was as a kid--lol.

  5. Do you have a Letterboxd account? Because you should. That can help you keep track of what you have and haven't seen. The "Pro" account gives you statistics on what and who you've seen the most.

I'm at Forever1267, if anyone wants to add me. I follow back!

On topic. Peppard was not really my type, but he was absolutely beautiful in the 60's.

  6. hsc, I thought Kate was HYSTERICAL on "AbFab," blind as a bat and eating the potpourri thinking it was trail mix! Like many supporting characters on "Dynasty," her part was sort of mangled and mismanaged. They'd bring people on and then sort of let them flounder. By all accounts, she was a pleasant coworker to the others in any case. As to Peppard's nipples, I have a pal who refers to those as "dime-size!" LOL

Gingerguy, I love those old print ads for Cannon towels with the various servicemen drying off out in the wilds. So I had to try to work that pun in. :-) I know you saw it back in the day, but for those unfamiliar, they're at the bottom:

SkippyDevereaux, no one's dopier than I was! Everyone was crying over Elvis' death and I thought he was hosting "Wheel of Fortune!" (Chuck Woolery! LOL)

Forever1267, you're ascribing a level of tech-savvy/Internet acumen that this ol' dog couldn't deal with! LOL I float around like an asteroid, clanking into this or that site. ;-) George isn't my own type either, really. I mean, he has neat features like his eyes and oddly grey-blonde hair, even as a youth, but somehow his persona leaves me pretty cold. I did just read a completely salacious bio on Steve McQueen that had he and George in an on and off love affair, though! Not that the book can be taken to heart as truth... Thanks!
