Poseidon Quickies: Things That Go Bump!

This is not one of my typically mammoth bulge posts of yore, but I do have a small collection of them that I will share as we head into the weekend. You'll notice that I had a bunch of posts go up in February, though they were mostly on the brief side. It's partly due to me digging out some archives that hadn't yet made it into other posts. (I used to put things like this on the site as potpourri or clearance or treasures from Poseidon's footlocker. Instead, I've been doing "Quickies" and so forth.) Cover boy today is Mr. Rock Hudson, walking along with Pretty Maids All in a Row (1971) costar Barbara Leigh, without benefit of underwear.

UFO is a show I've seen precious little of, though it always seems to be something I might like. I recently checked out one episode and Keith Alexander was sporting a clingy jumpsuit.

I've likely shared photos like these next ones before of Nick Tate from the similar (also Gerry Anderson-produced) sci-fi show Space: 1999, but these are of a higher quality thanks to upgraded copies of the series being made available.

I recently watched an obscure (that seems to be what I'm really into as of late!) horror flick called Crypt of the Living Dead (1973) on Tubi and it offered up a pair of actors from the 1960s & '70s.

Mark Damon and Andrew Prine.

Pretty-eyed Damon didn't really demonstrate too much bulge, though he did look great in his jeans.

Prine, though, wore several types of clingy, revealing trousers throughout the movie.

Prine would do a full-on nude layout for Viva Magazine the following year, proving that even the bulges seen here only tell a small part of the story...!

A faithful reader alerted me to the next example. In-between Star Trek and T.J. Hooker, William Shatner worked in any number of low-rent products, including the tacky, but nonetheless intriguing Kingdom of the Spiders (1977.) Shat is seen here with costar Tiffany Bolling, who seems to have gotten a bit of a rise out of him.

Joe Dallesandro is another one for whom bulge-watching seems superfluous since he was naked during many of his early movies, but as a complete-ist I present this moment from the unusual and surreal Black Moon (1975), in which he costarred with Cathryn Harrison (granddaughter of Rex.)

Lastly, I give you a guy who, while never much on my radar, has a tendency to pop up in posts of mine; Michael Brandon. In the 1979 drama Promises in the Dark, he plays a radiologist who falls for a doctor (Marsha Mason) who is in the throes of dealing with a terminal patient she feels strongly connected to.

She's not really up to pursuing a relationship, but he's pretty persistent.

Looks "promising" to me... LOL!

~~~BONUS PIC ~~~
I came upon this unusual shot of Tom Selleck, presumably in the wake of having a body mold made? The t-shirt is to protect him from a million chest hairs being tugged. I can't recall what movie in which he would have worn a skin-tight costume, such as this procedure is sometimes associated. But it seemed the right place for me to share the photo. Till next time!
  1. Mooseknuckle alert. I think the crotch depth (an actual garment manufacturer term) was shorter for a time in the late 60's and early 70's so the length of the distance between the middle of the front waistband to the middle of the back was shorter. It's great to look at but wouldn't have wanted to walk around like that all day.
    That being said...I love the photo of Tom Selleck, what a doll he was. I liked Gerry Anderson puppet shows better than the live action ones but these photos do have a fun and campy appeal.
    The appeal of Joe Dellasandro remains a mystery to me. Thanks for all the trouser tents.
  2. The shot of Tom Selleck might've had something to do with the movie COMA (1978), in which comatose people are suspended by wires attached to their bodies. (Just a wild guess based on a publicity still, haven't seen the film.)
    And I have to say this: Andrew Prine should've been cast as porn legend John C. Holmes in a biopic-- he was a dead ringer when he had the right hair and 'stache. (And he wouldn't even have needed to pad his underwear!)
    Thanks for another great post, Poseidon-- I love these "quickies"! Love to all and be safe and well, everyone!
  3. "Promises in the Dark" is pretty obscure as well as very dark. I barely remember it despite its being partially filmed at my apartment complex and around town at the time. Forgot that Micheal Brandon (one of Lindsay Wagner's four 3-year husbands), who now works primarily in the UK, was even in it. Thanks for the reminder.
  4. Always glad to see some Rock Hudson, especially in a mustache and goddamn, Shatner looks good in those jeans.
    Thanks for the post, Poseidon!
  5. Looks like my quick guess earlier was right-- I Googled and found an article talking about the body-casting session for COMA:
    "Tom explained on 'Live With Kelly and Michael' that he has brothers who are 6’7” so he was always the small one. He was also on a basketball team in college, but was too small to play forward.
    It wasn’t until Tom filmed a movie, COMA, a long while ago, that he finally realized how tall he was. He played a man in– you guessed it– a coma, so he had to have a full body cast made. When it was finally finished he realized, 'Hey, I’m a big guy!'
    Tom also explained how uncomfortable having a full body cast made actually is. While he was lying down, covered in plaster, he heard someone say, 'Oops,' and then another man say, 'It’s okay, as long as he can breathe.' That’s when he went into panic mode!"
    The article also talks about an "ecstatic" shower Tom took for a 1970 Safeguard soap commercial:
    https://www.recapo.com/live-with-kelly-ripa/live-with-kelly-interviews/tom-selleck-ecstatic-shower-scene-full-body-cast-for-64-tall-man/
    I'm not sure if this is Selleck in the foreground (he looks a little too lanky and it seems like he has no 'stache), but this was evidently what the castings were used to make:
    And I have to wonder-- just where *did* that Selleck body cast and the resultant prop body wind up? (Bob Burns' basement?)
    Thanks again for a great post, Poseidon! Love to all and be safe and well, everyone!
  6. I fell in love with Mark Damon when I saw him in Fall of the House of Usher when I was lil gayling. It’s a classic but would have been so much better had he been given a shirtless scene. Oh, how I waited for that scene but it never happened 😢
  7. "Pretty Maids All In A Row" is SO weird. I watched it because Tarantino raves about it. Borderline soft core is an understatement, and Andie Dickinson playing the ultimate MILF has to be seen to be believed. Same for Hudson, playing this over the top lecherous straight man. Lordy. Garish, grindhouse, slasher, exploitative weirdness. It's worth a look-see but damn.
  8. One of the stars of today, but if you want to see Zachary Levi, a.k.a. the current Shazam, head on over to TomAndLorenzo.com to see which side he dresses!
    "Coma" would make sense, since SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER we later see Selleck's body being carved up for the body parts.
    I know one body part of his I would like to try!
  9. Gingerguy, you are correct about the way garments were made. Also, people WORE their pants altogether differently. The bottom seam practically brushed the skin, leading to gents having to pick a side. :-) Now the waist is so low on many guys that the inseam is at mid-thigh half the time. (Recall back in the day when pants were worn at or above the belly-button! And, yes, I know that's before your time - and mine - but I mean when watching old movies, etc....) My favorite Gerry Anderson puppet show was "Captain Scarlet." I just loved the aesthetic of that one!
    hsc, you're SO right about Prine being prime to play Holmes. It could have been quite a movie...!! That was some amazing detective work you did on Tom Selleck's body cast. I would have sworn that the photo was from later in his career than that! I love, worship and adore the movie "Coma." It is so suspenseful (great music) and I howl over Elizabeth Ashley's insane performance. I have featured that Safeguard commercial here before. It's a total winner... He was GORGEOUS.
    BryonByronWhatever, that's neat that your complex was featured in a movie! Sometimes if I'm in the right frame of mind, I like a "downer" type of movie like "PITD" and I thought it would be worthwhile to check out Marsha Mason's performance in it.
    A, I'm glad you found something fun here. Shatner and I are similar in that we are capable of slimming down, but can also balloon up in a heartbeat! He had a lot of ups and downs, weight-wise, over the course of his career. (I read once that he'd show up for the first episodes of a season of "Star Trek" fit and trim and then progressively grow out of his shirts as the shows went along.) I thought he looked about his best in the very first (but dull) "Star Trek" movie. :-)
    bobraleigh, I feel like that's when I first saw Damon, too! His eyes were so pretty. All movies should contain at least one shirtless scene. LOL
    Ptolemy1, I somehow never seemed to really "get" whatever "Pretty Maids" was trying to be... but it was an irresistible cast that I had to check out. I found it really disturbing that my beloved "Isis" (Joanna Cameron) was a slut in it! LOLOL
    Forever1267! Wow... I saw the first "Shazam!" movie and didn't enjoy it, though Levi was appealing. I couldn't believe that leisure suit, but then further down. OMG. He's something. LOL about Selleck...!
  10. PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW (1971) was French director Roger Vadim's "first American film." That's what it was trying to be, and it wasn't quite enough to make it work. (Vadim wanted Brigitte Bardot to play Angie Dickinson's role, but I don't think she could've saved it-- and the mind boggles at what Joe Namath would've done with the Rock Hudson role.)
    He's pretty much forgotten today-- other than cult favorites BARBARELLA (1968) and BLOOD AND ROSES (1960)-- but Roger Vadim had a worldwide success with AND GOD CREATED WOMAN... (1956), largely due to its star-making exposure of Brigitte Bardot. That success led both Paramount and MGM to put Vadim under contract at various times over the next fifteen years for an American-made film.
    Alas, this is what MGM got when he finally delivered, and for years it was Vadim's only American film. It was also Gene Roddenberry's only script for a theatrical release.
    And bobraleigh, Mark Damon did a 1973 Italian horror film, IL PLENILUNIO DELLA VIRGINI ("The Full Moon of the Virgins"), released in the U.S. as THE DEVIL'S WEDDING NIGHT. The film was one of those early '70s Euro horror films with a lot of skin that was released in various edits (including a heavily cut TV print on Elvira's show).
    In at least some versions of the film, Damon has at least one bedroom scene (he plays good/evil twin brothers) that features him exposed at least from the waist up. I'm going mostly on publicity stills here and don't know how far things went, but you at least get a shirtless scene out of it, even if the focus isn't going to be on *his* chest:
    http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UtGIJnwvHvk/VLSwqLbhVeI/AAAAAAAA10k/TMcku0c_tsY/s1600/vamp3.jpg
    If you feel inclined to follow up, look for a release with the uncut footage. Since he did those scenes with cult star Rosalba Neri, they'll definitely be a selling point.
