Sometimes when I need a little lift, I watch the (endless!) procession that occurs during "When the Saints Go Marchin' In" (which they redubbed as "When the Saints COME Marchin' In" for some reason.) I have a picture that's a family tree of The Kings and, while it doesn't list their names, it has each face on a branch with the parents so it helps a LONG way in figuring out which blonde offspring goes with each blonde parent (in most cases, at lease!) It's almost a hobby to watch the show and be able to remark to whomever has been held captive to watch it beside you, "Oh, that's Cam. His mother is Alyce." or "Vonnie is Tina's mom" etc...! They were the wholesome '60s television staple who lived next door to Andy Williams on Variety Show Lane, down the block from the Dean Martin Cocktail Lounge and a few miles from the Lawrence Welk Retirement Community. They serve up a bumper crop of the Kings' toothy, proto-Osmonds brand of entertainment. Sunny, uniquely Californian, diabetic coma-inducing entertainment. For anyone under the age of fifty, you can be forgiven for watching this stuff and wondering "Who the heck are these people and why are they so goddamn happy?" With 30 to 35 Kings on screen at any given time, it's hard to keep track of who's who, but the focus on the family (no guest stars) makes it more consistent than other variety shows of the period. A phalanx of King urchins are also on hand to bring on the cuteness, although some of them perform in a half-hearted "I'm only doing this for the ice cream I was promised" kinda way. Such glorious hair!

Catherine Deneuve has always had the most gorgeous hair IMO. But Inger Stevens and Barbara Eden were tied with her, too. Deneuve also starred in an unusual film early on in hr career called "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg" where the entire cast sang all their lines through the whole film, not in any operatic style, by more in a low key, conversational way. She spent most of the movie wearing a longish flip, but in the last few minutes of the film she's wearing a large, bouffant pile up. Another favourite "hair" film I have of hers is "The Last Metro" which is set in wartime Paris, and Catherine plays the wife of a Jewish playwright and producer who's hiding out in the basement of the theatre they own. She wears several lovely period French Twist and Victory Roll hairstyles in that won.

You could also pint back to any "B"-grade western or "Sword and Sandals" epic from the Sixties to find hairstyles that'd be found on any Hollywood starlet of the same period. Now that's my kind of fab anachronism!

Here's a little mash-up I did of Demi Moore's lounge singer scene from "Bobby". There are some clearer images to be found if you Google "Demi Moore Bobby". Her 'do isn't that high, but it's deliciously lush and deep in back which makes it wonderfully glam in my book...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k2GIYMJoFwU

Hugs & Fab Hair!

Claire
IwannabeClairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02370333987099771668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-4974897214329227952014-01-01T18:30:30.382-05:002014-01-01T18:30:30.382-05:00Thanks Rick, Joel and Ken for your comments! As kids, if we wanted to watch TV in the evening on the weekends, it was such faire as The King Family, The Lawrence Welk Show, Hollywood Palace, and the Ed Sullivan Show - thus ruleth my dad. My younger sisters and I especially looked forward to Alvino Rey and his "talking" slide guitar, but what I really watched for was the glorious updo's of the King Sisters.

Being a child of that era gave me a passion for hair that still burns brightly for me today. To me, there is no more glamourous expression of hair artistry than the fabulous, elaborate, voluminous, towering, bouffant pile-ups of the mid- to late-60's, and I became an eager watcher of the shows I listed above, as well as the various beauty pageants of the day and other great "hair" shows such as "I Dream of Jeannie", "The Lennon Sisters Hour", and "Here Come the Brides". My parents may have thought I was watching the show for the shows themselves, but in reality it was for the hair.

I love to draw these kinds of elaborate hairstyles

http://iwannabeclaire.deviantart.com/gallery/

I do wish they'd make a comeback. Shows like "Mad Men" just don't do them justice...

Thanks for your wonderful blog as it's a real period gpld mine!

Hugs, Fab Hair, and Happy 2014!

Claire O'NeillIwannabeClairehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02370333987099771668noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-7028600455139774832013-12-31T17:30:18.244-05:002013-12-31T17:30:18.244-05:00A glamorous (and blindingly blond!) way to end the...A glamorous (and blindingly blond!) way to end the year! I used to have a crush on Tina Cole from her "My Three Sons" days, and my sisters and I used to have a ball watching "The Lawrence Welk Show"...it was like a visit to another planet. Looking at some of your photos, I recall now that The King Family, en masse, kind of scared me as a kid, looking as if they's stepped out of that movie "Children of the Damned."
Thanks for another year of fab posts, Poseidon.
