Always liked the original cast particularly the crusty Bones.

Nichelle Nichols was always so classy and even though she didn't have much to do she came across as capable and intelligent. I know the Sigourney Weaver character in Galaxy Quest was a riff on Uhura and she was great and wonderfully amusing but Uhura was never a ditz.

I hadn't realized about Grace Lee Whitney's problems, how sad, not being a regular watcher I had just assumed that she was an infrequent member of the cast. I was always pleased when she popped up in an episode.

I never watched any of the seemingly dozens of knockoffs of the series but did keep up with the original cast movies which varied greatly in quality. Probably the best of them was The Voyage Home where they returned to earth in search of whales to save the universe!, since it really focused on the original crew plus the terrific Catherine Hicks.

I did give the new reboot a shot and it was decent so I'll probably catch the next but it will never match the originals.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-74751611680091235282012-12-05T18:43:17.111-05:002012-12-05T18:43:17.111-05:00I went back and read the post again and realized t...I went back and read the post again and realized there is so much history with this one single entry.

I wanted to add, I never knew about the Paramount network bid till now. I guess it took Paramount (later UPN) 20 years after their first try to start another network with a Trek series as the signature show. That would have been Voyager. (Big fan here)

NN turned down a guest spot on Voyager because she felt she did not get enough lines.

I was watching when the original gang was saluted by NASA (I think they were carrying the actors' names off into space) and the most moving of tributes was deliverd to Ms. Nichols. It brought a tear (a few, really) when the first AA female astronaut ended the magnificent tribute to NN with, "All hailing frequencies open, Captain."

Finally, unlike some of you, I was never a big fan of the original show. I loved watching NN, but I really watched the show to see William Shatner shirtless every now and then. I only became a true and big-time Trekker when ST TNG premiered. Then it was all about Captain Picard's butt. (It really is magnificent for a rather slight man)

I'll go back now and anxiously await the next post.

To Poseidon and everyone here,Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, and all best wishes!NotFelixUngerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04812102754911699275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-57371546503938185972012-12-05T09:35:31.691-05:002012-12-05T09:35:31.691-05:00NotFelix, I can't recall why I left that out o...NotFelix, I can't recall why I left that out of the (lengthy as always!) post, but thanks for including it here.

Ken, I'm glad you liked this! I am only a fan of the initial series and couldn't get on board with everything that came after, so I sort of identify with you. I'm also glad you got a kick out of the hooty Uhura doll makeover. I had lots of practice in the "doll salon" with my step-sister and her Barbies. Once, we put makeup on one of her dolls and I used nail polish remover to take it off. It took off ALL the painted on features of the doll, which I then drew back on with a pen. We spoke little of the poor, damaged, mutant soul thereafter. It's great to learn so much about the life and career of Nichelle Nichols, who I've always thought exuded such a classy, dignified sex appeal. Favorite part of the post, however, is the makeover to the Uhura doll! Seriously, you did a brilliant job there! Thanks for shedding a much-deserved light on Nichols! It's not exactly a musical but it does have a couple of numbers she gets to do.

Thanks for another fun read.NotFelixUngerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04812102754911699275noreply@blogger.com
