I have been reading through a lot of your site and I think it is great that you are investing your time and attention to these wonderful films and stars. You will be happy to know that you are quickly becoming one of my "goto" sites when I want to learn more about a particular movie, celebrity etc. Eric T.https://www.blogger.com/profile/15288796678551203458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-14634373016803842202014-12-10T20:59:48.025-05:002014-12-10T20:59:48.025-05:00Eric, I am very fond of Deborah Kerr, so a tribute...Eric, I am very fond of Deborah Kerr, so a tribute to her here is definitely not out of the question. For the record, I think "Black Narcissus" is a mesmerizingly wonderful film and I LOVE Kerr cast against type as the adulteress in "From Here to Eternity." For someone who embodied so many tender characters, she played a great bitch in that one, too!Poseidon3https://www.blogger.com/profile/10465785002285422594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-54447121655678608012014-12-09T23:26:22.596-05:002014-12-09T23:26:22.596-05:00Deborah Kerr was absolutely radiant in this film. ...Deborah Kerr was absolutely radiant in this film. I agree with you that this is not a perfect movie (I am one of those people that sprint for the fast forward button when i see those kids....), but watching the chemistry between the two stars makes up for all the script's excesses. I would love to hear your take on her other films like From Here to Eternity or Black Narcissus, a beautiful and creepy picture.Eric T.https://www.blogger.com/profile/15288796678551203458noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-47786498869602849822014-11-24T10:56:36.934-05:002014-11-24T10:56:36.934-05:00I don't agree about the maturity/age factor of...I don't agree about the maturity/age factor of the two stars. I think the script makes it quite clear in the line "winter must be cold for those with no warm memories...we've already missed the spring." They both know that they are too old to lose this chance- that they have found true love with one another.
The script also implies that Terry has been with her boyfriend for a long time and they still are not married. I seem to remember the boyfriend (when Terry breaks up with him) saying that he should have married her long before now.
Which is to say, I don't believe the film is trying to pass off its stars as younger than they are.
For me, the maturity of the Kerr and Grant is what makes this film so poignant and that urgency to not lose this last chance at TRUE love transcends the corniness and datedness of the film's parts. Deborah and Cary make this film timeless. the more I watch it, the more I am astonished by the loveliness of their performances. They are very special actors., apart and together.Megan Caihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05605035222314433855noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-47419727565710935422010-12-11T01:26:27.103-05:002010-12-11T01:26:27.103-05:00Topaz, I have not seen (or even heard of!) One of the great romantic movies with perfect roles for Kerr and Grant - and yes we gloss over the fact that they are a bit mature for a first attempt at marriage! The Beatty one was hilariously awful in every respect [how did such a savvy operator lose his mojo so completely?], but that Scot Berg book on Hepburn was interesting on how he coaxed her to appear in it.Michael O'Sullivanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17820802843771524920noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-81754842339392448922010-12-09T18:31:35.569-05:002010-12-09T18:31:35.569-05:00I always learn so much from your posts. Even if I'm not crazy about a particular movie, I have to look at it with fresh eyes after reading your evaluation.

Boy, Cary seems really old in that last photo. It looks unretouched.

I love it when you include info on some of the supporting players, like the guy from Hawaii Five-0. I'm always thrilled to see familiar names pop up in places where I hadn't known them before. After watching "The Aventurers" and then "Arabesque" (Sophia and her legs!) I was surprised to see that the same actor had a major supporting role in both films.

On another note, I wonder if you know the Canadian series "Slings & Arrows." I've been watching it on netflix and its about the backstage workings of a Shakespearan troupe. Funny and dramatic and well-made, with Paul Gross and a young Rachel McAdams.Topazhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15514508159702613771noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-20230958124147502942010-12-08T21:00:25.433-05:002010-12-08T21:00:25.433-05:00this one is quite hard to resist.this one is quite hard to resist.normadesmondhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17325110017442011627noreply@blogger.com
