The connection: Patty Duke ("The Patty Duke Show") was offered the role of Sister Bertrille but she turned it down (https://www.crazyabouttv.com/flyingnun.html). Then they offered the role to Sally Field, featured in "Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring."

Micro-trivia: Patty Duke starred as Rev. Hannah Miller in the 6-episode "Amazing Grace" series (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111879/?ref_=nm_flmg_t_34_act) which was disparagingly categorized as "Sister Bertrille Gets Ordained."

xo

DKDavid Kenilworthhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12986313219990188387noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-25606327244350807502014-02-16T14:59:20.988-05:002014-02-16T14:59:20.988-05:00Fantastic post. A terrifically talented woman who now sadly will never receive that honorary Oscar she so richly deserved.

Just saw that TCM is doing a remembrance day of her films on the 17th. Still no Three Secrets damn it!, but many other good ones including two of her Oscar nommed roles. joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-22508813317261379942013-12-11T05:57:56.674-05:002013-12-11T05:57:56.674-05:00Thanks for this tribute, especially now that she i...Thanks for this tribute, especially now that she is gone. (With Miss Crawford being number one with a bullet!) Parker is a beautiful and talented woman--she truly deserves an "honorary" Oscar for her amazing career. Like you, it irks me that she's never been included in any of those "Sound of Music" reunions--people who love this movie LOVE Parker as "The Baroness"! Am hoping that someday, some way her "Bracken's World" TV series will be released to home video. It was a rather good show, even though Parker was under-utilized.
Thanks again for the "Double Parker"!Beefhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14483716577697671062noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-39313777377282627292013-11-15T11:47:11.472-05:002013-11-15T11:47:11.472-05:00I love the detailed post and pictures. There's a ton of movies on the list I want to see now.

The mention of your fan letter caught my eye. I did some quick research and have her home address if you would like to give it another try. My research also turned up that on average she takes between 3 and 4 months to reply but you would need to include your own picture for her to sign. Ha!) I've fixed that hilarious blunder ("Double Parker" indeed!)

And, as you intimate, there are so, so, many movies and shows that never see the light of day anymore and it's aggravating, yet we have countless TV stations/channels!! I saw Madame X on TNT many, many moons ago and didn't like it at all despite my adoration of Parker. Granville Van Dusen as the husband?!? And the daughter thing just ruins it. But as you say it's certainly worth seeing once just for the curiosity value. It seems hard to believe that a Robert Wise movie (one that was a hit!) like Three Secrets is MIA, too. But you can probably pick up the remake with Jaclyn Smith with ease... LOL

Lassie, I might be in the minority in preferring that the Baroness not sing because I feel like it makes her that much more excluded from all the fun and frolic and tugs at her inadequacy in that arena. She probably feels that she has sex as a weapon, but in the end it's not enough. Having her non-musical helps put that membrane up that she can't break through once the Captain regains his own voice. (And if they'd wanted to retain the songs and Parker couldn't sing them, they could have always dubbed her like they did both Christopher Plummer and Peggy Wood!) Thanks for reading and commenting! :-)Poseidon3https://www.blogger.com/profile/10465785002285422594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-54791680554761694992013-11-14T07:37:48.796-05:002013-11-14T07:37:48.796-05:00I assumed that the songs from The Sound of Music h...I assumed that the songs from The Sound of Music had been cut because Powell couldn't sing and they really wanted her for the role - which she was ideal for. Thanks for correcting my knowledge. One of my f...Terrific overview of a fine actress.

One of my favorites of hers is the early Between Two Worlds, but that isn't exclusively because of her-what a cast and an intriguing story that movie has.

You had mentioned Eye of the Cat as your holy grail movie of hers but for me it has to be Three Secrets-it's hardly ever shown for some reason even though her other Warner output seems readily available.

A couple of months ago she was TCM's star of the month and I was able to catch many of those titles of hers that had eluded me. Of them I really enjoyed the Seventh Sin more than I expected to, mostly I think because it gets talked down. I haven't seen the original but had liked the recent remake quite a bit and decided to give it a chance. Obviously curtailed by the production code of the time I still found it interesting with good work by she and George Sanders. The same couldn't be said for some of the other obscure titles although they did show The Oscar for the first time in years and it was a hoot and a half!

I'm glad you mentioned her TV work. I've seen the one/two Sally Field punch of Maybe I'll Come Home in the Spring-dated but a compelling look at the generation gap as well as the absurd but still enjoyable Home for the Holidays, but Eleanor and Sally as sisters???? Ridiculous. I also watched Madame X on original broadcast and would love to see it once more just to see Tuesday and Eleanor square off again which no matter what the quality of the rest of the picture would make it a totally worthwhile investment of time. It doesn't seem to be one of the TV films available on Youtube sadly.

One note, when you mentioned her first two daughters you have them both as Susan! It's a nice name and I'm sure she likes it but I'm guessing not enough that both girls share the same name.

joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.com
