I hope you enjoyed seeing her in "Autumn Leaves" and "Back Street" as much as I did! In "Autumn," she was on the receiving end of some blistering Crawford vitriol, but she sure gave some out of her own in "Street!"Poseidon3https://www.blogger.com/profile/10465785002285422594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-44557082753105200162014-07-18T16:29:27.816-04:002014-07-18T16:29:27.816-04:00Vera Miles is one of my favorite actresses, she...Vera Miles is one of my favorite actresses, she's really very very good, I was so impressed after I saw her in "Psycho" that I bought the "Autumn leaves" and "Back street" DVDs !! Thank you Poseidon for the wonderful post and pictures !!! ...

... I'd like to add that I'm also fond of her Tarzan husband Gordon Scott, I read a lot about their couple on the Internet, from what I understand, they were very happily married for the whole time they were together, but Scott had a problem he could not resist women so he betrayed her and she could not forgive him so they divorced; this is just a guess but I think that is what happened because just a few weeks before the divorce they planned to extend their house, and then when asked about the divorce, Miles said something along the lines of "these things happen" ... So I think they divorced because HE slept with another woman, not because she met Mr Larsen...

... Anyway thanks again !!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-90802085362583846252013-05-31T18:27:59.760-04:002013-05-31T18:27:59.760-04:00Sorry, that should have been "Lovely But Leth...Sorry, that should have been "Lovely But Lethal."RobGhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13763288081182666640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-1573048255412923162013-05-31T18:26:58.062-04:002013-05-31T18:26:58.062-04:00This is fantastic, the kind of tribute Vera deserv...This is fantastic, the kind of tribute Vera deserves, thank you. She is my all-time favorite actress. I'm looking at an 8x10 on my wall of Vera with Ross Hunter and David Miller on the set of "Back Street," in the car crash gown ("flattering but impossible"). It was the very first movie I can remember liking as a kid. My mom loved it, probably saw it with her on the 4:30 movie, and Liz Saxon scared the living hell out of me. "Was she expensive darling?" Brilliant actress, great performance, she should have won a Supporting Actress Oscar. She also did some great work on the original "Outer Limits" and "Columbo" as the murderous head of a cosmetics company ("Lovely But Lethan"). I hope she knows how many devoted fans she has. Thanks for the great summary of a spectacular career. There was supposedly more focus on her newfound religion. I love reading it. I tend to agree with you that, despite some (typical for Hollywood!) divorces, she seems to have been quite normal. Her on-set, out of character photos almost always seem to indicate that she was fun to be around and in good spirits.

I also agree very much about the "Morning After" dialogue. If they'd have gone with a made-up name, no one would have gotten the "joke," but in going with a name that people recognize in an attempt to put it across, the joke's purpose is defeated because the punchline is that the person is supposed to be unknown. Vera was very well known to TV audiences at the very least. Odd choice of actress for that line IMO. Thank you for reading and chiming in!Poseidon3https://www.blogger.com/profile/10465785002285422594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-48557859624794295112011-11-30T15:43:15.665-05:002011-11-30T15:43:15.665-05:00Great tribute - we love Vera. Hitch certainly wanted to build her up too, of course. She seemed to be a no nonsense trouper. Five Branded Women is certainly a bizzare downbeat entry, I need to see it again now.

Now how about Martha Hyer? also still with us and no doubt wealthily retired. I didn't care for the movie too much (maybe it would have worked for me better if Miles and Hayward had switched characters)but the wedding dress scene: "Doesn't matter if it fits, she'll never get to wear it!" Oh, this is bitch Heaven!
And of course, Autumn Leaves (LOVE Joanie's smackdown of Miles and Greene "You, his loving, doting fraud of a father--and you, you SLUT!")
Crawford and Miles appeared together in 1969's Journey To The Unknown, a REALLY creepy anthology mystery; I've been wanting to do a post about it myself, but my copy is too messed up for screencaps)
Yeah, Vera Miles is something else, maybe she didn't hit the heights just because she was too normal, personally? Despite the divorces she seemed on a pretty even keel. Who knows?
One more thing, in The Morning After, Jane Fonda's Alex is a washed up, alcoholic actress implicated in murder, and when her (possible) love interest asks her who she is/was, she says something along the lines of "I was supposed to be the 'next Vera Miles' I was supposed to replace someone nobody'd ever heard of!" I always thought that rather harsh!
Great post about a good actress, Poseidon--sorry for rambling on so long!AKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02084216883655540363noreply@blogger.com
