Where to start to...Wonderfully fun and informative. Where to start to comment on the treasures contained?

All the covers bring back memories but that would take forever to comment so I'll just mention a few that struck me.

That Gardner McKay sure was beautiful, too bad his acting prowess didn't match his looks. I've seen a few things he's done, including The Pleasure Seekers (a fabulous mess of a movie!), and he was rather wooden and bland but still excessively easy on the eyes for sure.

I remember Dorothy Provine more as Lily Olay, the blowsy saloon singer, in The Great Race and that crazy number she did in it. That's a terrific picture of her, love how her lipstick and hat match!

Loved Bill Bixby in everything but The Hulk, just not my thing, but most of all I think in The Courtship of Eddie's Father. I use to watch My Favorite Martian reruns regularly when I was a kid, it was silly but Bill and Ray Walston made it so much better by not overdoing the concept and Pamela Britton was perfection as Lorelei Brown.

A couple quickies. Love the picture of the so-called second tomatoes but what is Marjorie Lord wearing!?

That is a great picture of MTM and Dick Van Dyke, really epitomizes the Petries.

Also great pic of the Beverly Hillbillies girls, it always was surprising when Irene Ryan used to appear on talk shows all turned out as a stylish matron. Same when she pops up in old films, my favorite of those being Blackbeard the Pirate where she's all tricked out in 17th century finery as Linda Darnell's tippling lady in waiting.

Probably because it was a fixture of my youth and of course his abbreviated costume Ron Ely was always my favorite Tarzan even though as I remember it now he was the least nature bound of all the kings of the jungle.

So glad you included He & She! Hollywood certainly missed the boat on Paula Prentiss. One of those great short-lived shows hardly anyone remembers but I have fond memories of along with Love on a Rooftop, the Scoey Mitchell version of Barefoot in the Park and Good Morning, World.

Eve Arden and Ann Sothern would have made a great team for a sitcom but they were right to have Kaye Ballard for The Mothers-In-Law. Eve and Kaye's ying and yang saved many a shaky episode.

I don't even know what to say about Barbara Feldon's getup on that cover! A fine lesson in how to make a beautiful woman look ridiculous. Surprising since so much of her wardrobe as 99 was fashion forward that they would get her up in something that looks like bedsheets and put a mop on her head.

I wasn't aware of the casting juggling behind the scenes of the Flying Nun or that Patty Duke had turned it down. I can't quite imagine Patty as Sister Betrille, plucky though she may be. I know Sally had to struggle for years to overcome that image along with Gidget, when she was filming her breakthrough role in Sybil the crew nicknamed it "Gidget Goes Nuts", but I've read that Madeleine Sherwood, Reverend Mother, took her under her wing on that show and started her really studying her craft which of course lead to her very distinguished career.

I wasn't a regular viewer of Land of the Lost but I do for some reason remember Deanna Lund on an episode of "Stump the Stars" when they tried to revive it in the early 70's. It was a version of celebrity charades, a lot of fun but didn't last long. I remember Burt Ward being on the same show and being surprised how normal he looked out of the Boy Wonder costume.

As always thanks for all the hard work Poseidon, always a pleasure to stop by your corner of the web.joel65913https://www.blogger.com/profile/14526657073681774683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-72563185547822356612013-10-01T08:19:01.579-04:002013-10-01T08:19:01.579-04:00Thank you, guys, for taking the time to comment. ...Thank you, guys, for taking the time to comment. Ken, I'm glad you enjoyed the tidbits of info I sprinkled in! I used to take old TV Guides to college and do the crossword puzzles in them when I was bored (in class! Or waiting for class to start) and one pen I owned had a highlighter at the opposite tip. Some girl accused me of going through the TV Guide and highlighting it. It made me mad because she never let it go and that is not what I was doing (but I also wouldn't have put it past me. Ha!)

Bistis6, welcome to The Underworld. I think I went to that TV Guide site once a few years ago and I know the photos are of much higher quality. Somehow I just felt like using "authentic," careworn copies of these (with a few fixes here and there on my part) to demonstrate their age and the punishment they often went through. Anyway, thank you for the resource and for coming here!

Scooter, always good to see you. My family always relied on the hideous Sunday paper TV directory rather than "splurging" on TV Guide, but once I was older, I began to buy it for myself.

Oh yes, NotFelix! I LOVED the Fall Preview issue. It was so thorough and contained great pictures from the new shows. It was heavily-awaited in my world for many years. I watch almost no scripted network TV now, but back in the day I was hooked.Poseidon3https://www.blogger.com/profile/10465785002285422594noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-41208600577862178412013-09-30T13:54:18.198-04:002013-09-30T13:54:18.198-04:00I used to wait anxiously for The Fall Preview TV G...I used to wait anxiously for The Fall Preview TV Guide to appear every year. I would also buy it if a hunk I liked was on the cover.

I don't think I recall seeing Roy Thinnes in the underworld before but I always thought he was gorgeous. Even now, still a hunk.

Are those scratch marks over Loretta's throat? I wouldn't put it past Joan!NotFelixUngerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04812102754911699275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-4268273357285177912013-09-30T08:38:11.035-04:002013-09-30T08:38:11.035-04:00I remember when TV Guide was a fixture in every Am...I remember when TV Guide was a fixture in every American household. As to the quality of the covers available to you, did you know that the TV Guide website has an archive of all its covers from the 1950s to the present? Here's the link:

TV Guide Cover Archive

The images are of pretty good quality, too, and it's great to see some of the wonderful artwork Bob Peak, Richard Amsel, etc. Many of those covers I remember to this day.

I only stumbled across the site about a week ago, and I've visited it often since then.

Enjoy!bistis6https://www.blogger.com/profile/03335237816132498306noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4006108502645191096.post-40565350916592894022013-09-28T08:52:13.131-04:002013-09-28T08:52:13.131-04:00Wow! It's great seeing so many terrific covers and to learn heretofore unknown bits of info about the stars and the shows.
Of late I've been revisiting a lot of shows from the past on Cozi TV, MeTV, and Antenna T, and so seeing all of these TV Guide covers bring back memories (memories of my older sister going through the entire issue when it arrived in the mail and circling in red pen, all the late night movies - mostly camp films - she would make us watch). thanks for another fun post, and I especially appreciate the Richard Chamberlain entry. He was my prepubescent dreamboat!Ken Andersonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04940648971296673233noreply@blogger.com
